Who is God?

Biblically, God is revealed as a complex, multifaceted being whose identity unfolds progressively throughout Scripture. Here are the key aspects:

The One True God

The Bible presents God as the only true God, emphasizing monotheism: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4). All other so-called gods are false idols.

God’s Names and Character

God reveals Himself through various names that reflect His nature:

  • Yahweh (LORD) – His personal, covenant name meaning “I AM”
  • Elohim – God as powerful Creator
  • El Shaddai – God Almighty
  • Adonai – Lord and Master

His character is described as: holy, loving, just, merciful, faithful, eternal, omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (everywhere present).

The Triune God

Christianity understands the Bible to reveal God as Trinity—one God in three persons:

  • God the Father – the source and authority
  • God the Son (Jesus Christ) – the Word made flesh, through whom creation occurred and redemption came
  • God the Holy Spirit – God’s presence actively working in the world and believers

This isn’t three gods, but one divine being existing in three distinct persons—a mystery central to Christian theology.

God as Creator and Sustainer

God created all things and actively sustains creation (Genesis 1, Colossians 1:16-17).

God as Redeemer

Throughout Scripture, God works to restore broken humanity to relationship with Himself, culminating in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.
